The following is what I believe is in the formula. Most of this is from the patent I have read, and trial and error in using the formulas.
The purifier contains non-iodized salt (you cannot use table salt, the iodine will kill them!), calcium chloride, eggs, and sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda). I'm not sure where you can get the calcium chloride, but I've done without it just fine. My current brine shrimp tank is using these ingredients. The egg packet contains epsom salt, dye, and sea salts (which can be found at a pet store or Wal-Mart).

I like this store http://www.aquaticeco.com/
they also have food but it's $30 but it lasts a long time. http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/12649/cid/
also, a hydrometer is essential, to check how much salt you have. My water salinity is set to 1.023 right now.
and also chemicals to make the PH around 8.2, I bought some powder for that at the petstore.

Very true. I keep my salinity at 1.019-1.025. To manage PH, I use baking soda.

Can they be ground into a fine powder? If not the sea monkeys won't be able to eat them. I reccommend you find an algae powder at the pet store if you really want to get close to the sea monkey growth food formula. You could of course use yeast as well.

I see where you are coming from, but actually you can. In fact, The egg packet contains yeast which is why you don't have to feed them for a week. In the many years that I have experimented with this, you are right you can fail, and I have, but it was soley because of the kind of yeast I used. There are several yeast's on the market some that are highly active. Those are the ones you definitely want to avoid. Yeast is a bacteria and the highly active type grows rapidly which can deprive the sea monkeys of oxygen. The idea is to look at the ingredients and make sure it only says yeast. Most yeasts sold today have other ingredients in them, which is why its hard to find a successful tank that is using yeast. If you are lucky enough to find a fine ,pure yeast, then it is safe to use. A while back I had a shortage of sea monkey food because I my cat had the packet all on the floor. I didn'd want to sweep it up and use it, because that was asking for contamination. I used a good brewer's yeast for the time being until I was able to order more food. The tank lived for months, of course until my cat eventually knocked them over. (It was an old Ocean Zoo back in the '90s)

I guess the cats are a little too curious. Mine had kittens and I had to give them all away because I found out I was allergic to cats.
As far as the Yeast goes, I use Fleischman's Yeast, but I don't know if it is available in your area. The ingredients on the back merely say "Yeast".

My friend feeds her Brine shrimp powdered Spirulina or Brewer's Yeast too. She occasionally mixes them but has had varying results with the yeast and said the Spirulina works the best.

Exactly! I mix the two together as well and find that to be a great substitute. If I could find a could powdered algae, I use that on it's own.

ok for a substitute purifier use non iodized salt and just regular baking soda?
for a substitute food use bakers yeast and or powdered alge?
do i need to add the sea salt and espom salt that is in the egg packet if i am using just eggs not a packet?
and how much of each thing in the purifier and how much of the purifier do i put in for each 12oz.

If you have sea-salt, you don't need the non-iodized salt. I use this formula
1/2 tbsp. + 3/4 tsp. Sea Salt 1/8 tsp. Epsom Salt 1/8 tsp. baking Soda A pinch of eggs. 10 oz. Distilled Water
I add all of that in at once, then add water. I don't wait 24 hours for growing regular brine shrimp, but I do wait the 24 hours for the sea-monkeys.

What type are you using? If it is a Sea-Monkey tank, then it will be 10oz. That is why the tell you to fill it to the top edge of the top magnifier of the Ocean Zoo. That is 10oz. The whole container is 12 oz, but you never fill the whole thing up.
