For JET program, applicants must know some working level Japanese to be able to communicate in a Japanese office teaching environment.  If the applicant is not 100% proficient, it's required that further lessons be taken  in Japan.  I didn't know Japanese words could be typed in this forum :) Yeah, Boku wa daisuki anime too :)    Report

If you get government placement or something, then yes you need to know some, but for teaching specefically (English) you can be without. 日本語は楽しい。(Nihongo wa tanoshii - Japanese is fun!)    Report

It seems that the US site is more specific about Japanese proficiency for ALT (Assistant Language Teachers) and CIR (Coordinator for International Relations). For US citizens, for ALTs, there is no Japanese language requirement, whereas CIRs are expected to be proficient in Japanese. So yes, for US citizens, there's no need to know Japanese to teach English. But in the faqs, it says that some knowledge of Japanese would be an advantage :)    Report

I think I like them about the same..it's hard to choose! As for Gravitation - I found a write up that explains the basic plot. ^_^ "Bad Luck's lead singer and lyricist, Shuichi Shindo, is a total wreck. With deadlines for the band's next album looming, the pressure is on, but the normally energetic Shuichi has become listless and fallen into a writing slump. It's all because Yuki the great love of his life has suddenly become cold and distant. Depressed and anxious, Shuichi doesn't want to think about lyrics he just wants to know how to get Yuki to talk to him! Now, thanks to Shuichi's big mouth bragging to the press about how talented he is, the band can't even hire someone else to write the lyrics for them. If they don't manage to break Shuichi out of his slump soon, it could mean the end of Bad Luck for good!" I also think Gravitation has some of the best anime music I've ever heard, the soundtracks are worth checking out. ^_^    Report

I love too many of them to narrow it down...but have you seen the Wolf's Rain anime? That's an excellent one.  As for Manga recently I enjoyed Princess Ai and I've just bought a series called The Earthian....both Manga and Anime versions. The stars of Earthian are Chihaya and Kagetsuya, a pair of the race of Angels who hail from the planet Eden. Angels in the Earthian universe are alien, but not so different from humans -- Earthians, as the Angels call them. While the Angels may not be Heavenly messengers we are used to, they are on Earth for a specific reason: to watch and evaluate the Earthians, and discover if they should be saved... or destroyed. Chihaya and Kagetsuya are one of many pairs of Angels who are sent to Earth in order to perform this evaluation. Kagetsuya makes note of the "minuses," or the evil points of the Earthians. Chihaya checks for the "pluses," or the good things about humans. If 10,000 minuses are checked, then the Angels will destroy the Earth and everyone on it. There's more to it as well.but that's the basics... I think I've seen more anime than read manga....but I'm buying a lot more manga recently.    Report

My favorite anime is Azumanga Daioh..I also like FLCL..I have only seen EVA once but enjoyed it (on CN). Princess Mononoke..Spirited Away..some Dragon Ball stuff...Naruto, Lupin the 3rd, Samurai Champloo etc. ^__^ I collect some things like DVDs. I have a Lupin toy, some FMA toys (I like that anime too), an Azu button badge, a Paranoia Agent soundtrack..another good anime..so yeah soundtracks, dvds, toys, plushies..and yay for manga! I consider myself a huge anime fan too. I even love the fan fiction/ art. But sadly I have not been to a con. There was one here recently and my friend stood me up so I didn't make it. Blehhh Don't anime fans and sea monkey owners go well together? We're nerds yay! We're double nerds coz we're sea monkey owners and anime fans at the same time. Sweet.    Report

But there are mixed views on how good it is. I think people have said the final ending is not really good. I didn't watch the final ending, but the anime was ok, if somewhat confusing. Oh, Princess Ai...I bought volume 1 some time back because that was the only volume available at the time. How many volumes have you read?  The Earthian sounds interesting! :) So, your manga reading is now catching up with your anime watching eh. Yep, the Wolf's Rain ending was one of those 'open to interpretation' ones. But I've seen stranger endings than that, lol. Princess Ai is just the 3 volumes. Earthian is 4 and I've just started reading it. They've gone all out with the presentation as well, it's gorgeous looking and 400 pages per volume!!!    Report

"Open to interpretation" is right! :) Yeah, it's true some anime have even more "open" endings. Do you prefer "open" to something more conclusive? Oh. So, Princess Ai is only 3 volumes? Doing things differently from the anime and creating "what-ifs". There're different flavours of pocky these days. Apart from the usual strawberry & chocolate, there's peach with those twirly white stuff and green tea etc. They're from Japan and are expensive for just a few sticks. I just stick to the usual :) Just bought a strawberry pocky packet & finished it.    Report
