Crying [:'(] Smonkey death... HELP!
Reply Quote

My largest smonkey died today...  Sad news I know.  But I really need help to find out why.

It all started when I saw that she had some fluff stuck to her yesterday morning.  It was really slowing her down and restricting her movement and I just went away and presumed she'd shake it free.  Later on, about 10 hours later, I noticed it was still on her, but she was still alive and kicking, albeit slowly.  Eventually, with the help of pouring the smonkey tanks water in and out of a large container, the fluff came off her and she swam around happiliy.  However, this morning I noticed that she had a large black lump in her "throat", for want of a better word.  (It was the area just below the eyes.)  I thought that maybe it was a build up of food or something so I went off to work.  However, when I arrived home she was lying on the tank floor, practically dead.  She didn't move for huge periods of time, then she'd spasm for a few seconds then stop.  The black dot was bigger than before and I decided to suck her out of the tank out of contamination fears and flush her away, as it seemed like the only humane thing to do.

So what on earth happened to my smonkey and why?

R.I.P.  Big Momma.  Aged 3 weeks.

Well, the fluff could have been bacteria, was it whitish or may it just have been sediment at the bottom of the tank?

About the black dot, it's a common Sea Monkey disease. It usually goes away, especially ith the aid of Sea Medic, but it can be lethal. I'm not totally sure if it's contagious to the other Sea Monkeys.

Anyways, sorry she died. Rest in peace, Big Momma.

I noticed some white fluff on my biggest male's antennae.  (His name is Sea King.)  Then I noticed another bunch of it floating in the tank.  Luckily, I have a pouch of Sea Medic, so I put a spoonful of it in the tank.  I hope it does the trick.

I'm glad this didn't happen over a weekend.  I'm usually gone Friday thru Sunday during the summer.

Anyhow, I'm sorry to hear about Big Momma.

LisaH

Well, I feel very sorry for your loss :(. If it was in her throat, could it have been a goiter? (Hyperthyroidism). It's from lack of iodine :P. I had one but I got treated with a radio0iodine pill that I swallowed. Maybe a gin of slt crushed up and put in a very small container with her could have solved it?
