Everyone say hi to the newbie! ^_^ Just joined this forum today- and I started a colony of SeaMonkeys on Saturday. I was very keen to get some as a kid, but it never happened. It's so far so good with my tank (I have the Magic Castle set) and am loving these little guys already...        Report

When feeding them it is a good idea to feed them once a week with a level spoonful of the small end of the yellow spoon. But once algae starts growing (green in the bottom of the tank) don't feed them until they seem to be getting hungry, you can tell because the food in their system will start to fade (the dark line will start fading) also if it doesn't fade, feed them once a month, because they love to eat algae and they probably will have a great supply of food with it.    Report

Thanks! I think I might have overfed my first tank (I had sea monkeys last year, these new guys are actually my second attempt) The first ones grew up to a great size and and I had an 'extra large' sea monkey who was almost white compared to all the others. But then they all started dying on me.. :(  I already had some 'fluff' in the tank so got that out as best I could and I have put a lil' scoop of Sea Medic in as well as a first feed today. Hope that was a wise move.....     Report

Also when the algae starts to grow in your tank be sure not to add too much food because they love algae.    Report

They're doing well...still got stuff appearing in the water that won't seem to stay gone....wish that aqua-leash was a bit longer to reach the tricky places. It's not algea, it's nasty stuff that they get trapped in  :(  But on the upside I still have a lot of them. :)    Report

Thanks.  ^_^ Lol, I've been keeping a blog on there progress..here's the latest!  May:  Okay, so I'm clueless as to how many days we're into now....and I can't be bothered to count lol.  The lil' critters are doing well, still must have at least 20 adults, it's kind of hard to count when they're whizzing around lol...and in addition to those I already have some babies arriving in the tank. Tiny lil' things, barely 2mm I'd say. When they first hatch you can't even see them. One of my MySpace ppl wants to see pics...that's gonna be a challenge...so when I figure out how I'm actually gonna photograph something this size through a curved surface I'll have a go. ^_^  June: Latest report on my funky monkeys lol: The now not-so-little guys are still doing alright, ironically ever since I decided to stop being quite so precise with looking after them, I seem to have less problems. Trust me, you can get all sorts of dumb junk for them which you really don't need! can we say SEA-DIAMONDS people? I gotta say even though they're a titchy species, they look cool when they are fully grown. Oh, and two of them are mating right now lol, so there will be some more babies before too long.    Report

Yes, I, myself, have seen a better environment for them, when you just let them roam and do what they want. Sea Diamonds are far from a necessity, and I never bought them. Thanks for telling me not to add much food when there's algae, that was a BIG help. ^_^ I haven't given them any for a week or so because they still have unbroken black lines down them and look full. So do they need no extra food at all while there's algae?   They've had plenty of indirect sunlight of late, I keep them on a north facing window ledge and there's a nice lot of algae in the tank now and they love it. Big enough now that I can see the line down their backs and they're all full up. Got some more eggies in the tank now so they should hatch out soon. Will I have to move them to a bigger tank if things go well and I wind up with loads? And if I do, will they grow any more?  My neighbour had them in a bigger tank and I was told they grew a lot larger than my guys are now.       Report

There's been plenty of indirect sun in the tank so plenty of algae, which means that I don't have to feed them right now as they have enough natural food. They seem to have gone a bit crazy though, almost every female seems to be pregnant, or mating, and the leftover males seem to be in short supply. Such short supply that they are fighting over the girls! Yup, sea monkeys fight, the guys (literally) lock horns and try to out-do each other. So yeah, it's basically turning into a miniature aquatic version of the Big Brother House, lol.    Report
